by John Hendron · Jan 8, 2013

I’ve put together a little guide for connecting to Goochland with social media tools like Edmodo, Twitter, Facebook, and of course, our blogs.

Parents: This is a nice one-stop guide for everything we’re publishing online.

Teachers: feel free to link to this resource for parents via your blogs.

Secret Life of a Sixth Grader

by John Hendron · Nov 28, 2012

This is an interesting article written from the perspective of a parent, who discovers her son’s thriving life online through Instagram, a photo sharing service.

> When my son was sleeping, I was checking the text messages and followed the Instagram updates — after all, this wasn’t really sneaking if my son maintained a public profile. But what could I say? Should I tell him that I am monitoring his moves? Was my looking at text messages the same as reading a diary? Was I violating my son’s privacy and simply making too much of this?

Here are some tips we’ve compiled for parents and families.

Thanks to Mrs. Bachmann who forwarded me this article!

Mars Project + Blog Updates

by John Hendron · Jun 4, 2008

First, a note to teachers and parents:    Visit this website to learn more about the University of Arizona sponsored Mars mission and content that’s available on iTunes!    Second, a note about this blog (and our teacher blogs):    In 2005, Goochland became, what we understand, the first school district in the nation to require teachers to maintain a blog. In some ways this decision was controversial, but what it said to our stakeholders was this:    – We are going to use technology to bridge the divide between our classrooms and your home,  – We believe communication is important!    Three years later, we still believe the read/write web is with us to stay, and that it will be an important component towards citizenship in the 21st century.    What you are reading is now on our new blogging server. Since 2005, we have been running the same server software to support the Goochland Blogging Initiative, Mac OS X Tiger Server and Blojsom. This software could no longer support our initiative, as many may have discovered performance issues over the past 4 months.    This summer we will be rolling out new editions of our teacher blogs with this functionality:   * Better performance  * Continued ease of use for teachers  * RSS Support  * Comments and Trackbacks    We hope that “Blogging 2.0” is something you will support us with in SY 2008-09. We hope to continue to better communications and blaze the trail.    Thanks for reading – and have a great summer!    John Hendron,  Webmaster
